FRMCS: Conversion GSM-R
FRMCS and its Europe-wide introduction places special demands on infrastructure providers of rail transportation systems for the conversion of the current GSM-R system technology to the future-oriented train communication medium FRMCS.
FRMCS in its system design is a completely newly developed communication medium which is not downward compatible with GSM-R. The redesign of the new operator-specific FRMCS system architecture requires in-depth knowledge of FRMCS, which describes, plans and implements the systemic implementation and the infrastructure required for operation.
The redesign of the infrastructure on the track is characterized by the range possibilities of the 1900 MHz FRMCS band and the resulting mast locations, the fronthaul and backhaul connections. Particular attention will be paid to the operation of FRMCS, which as a “mission critical system” must be subject to special operator protection.
A number of existing national applications will be transferred from GSM-R to FRMCS and expanded with additional new, Europe-wide standardized applications, such as ATO, APS, IPM and CM. The future-oriented automated train operation (ATO) requires extremely low latencies and large bandwidths (video transmission), which can be guaranteed by FRMCS technology in the future.
